ELEMENTARY SCHOOLERS

(AGES 6-9)

The Slide

In this program, players will take the plunge into the world of improv through a variety of theater games and exercises. They will learn to work with their peers as a team, exploring what it means to support each other as both actor and audience. Players will create original characters and environments that they will use in funny, creative play.

Beginners welcome.

THE Slide: CORE

Sunday Mornings (10 Weeks)

Session Runs: Sundays, September 29th through December 15th, 2019

No class October 13th and December 1st.

Open classroom demonstration on Sunday, December 15th. Parents and guests welcome at 10:30AM.

Class Meeting Time: 10:00AM-11:30AM

Location: Ripley-Grier Studios, 520 8th Ave, New York, NY 10018

Teacher: Jordan Bialik

Class Description: Through playing fun and exciting games, young improvisers will learn to perform without written dialogue in a theatrical setting. They will be introduced to elements of storytelling such as character, motivation, and relationship. Students will be encouraged to listen mindfully to their partners while staying curious and making bold choices! Players will perform improvised characters and scenarios in a classroom demonstration during the final class session.

MIDDLE SCHOOLERS

(AGES 10-12)

The Seesaw

In this program, pre-teens will learn to balance strong improv skills with their unique comedic voices. Players will learn to perform short-form improv games by exploring the tenants of strong scene work that has a clearly defined who, what, and where. Deep focus on acceptance, listening, awareness, and grounding will allow players to engage with each other as a team.

Sunday Afternoons (10 Weeks)

Session Runs: Sundays, September 29th through December 15th, 2019

No class on October 13th and December 1st.

Open classroom demonstration on Sunday, December 15th. Parents and guests welcome at 1PM.

Class Meeting Time: 12:30PM-2:00PM

Location: Ripley-Grier Studios, 520 8th Ave, New York, NY 10018

Teacher: Jordan Bialik

Class Description: Over ten weeks, players will build an improvised universe with original characters and settings. In doing so, players will build teamwork skills and take ownership of their creative ideas, while building an understanding of improv performance and convention. During the final class session, players will perform fully-realized characters in improvised scenarios in an open classroom demonstration.

THE Seesaw: Core

Tuesdays After School (10 Weeks)

Session Runs: Tuesdays, September 24th through November 19th, 2019, Sunday Demonstration Follows

Class Meeting Time: 2:30PM-4:00PM

Location: Ripley-Grier Studios, 520 8th Ave, New York, NY 10018

Teacher: Jordan Bialik

Class Description: Players will learn to perform an entirely-improvised play about original improvised characters who live in a completely improvised town. Through using various storytelling conventions, players will be able to perform stories that have build-ups, turning points, and resolutions. During the final class session, players will perform for guests in a black-box theatre.

Prerequisite: The Seesaw: Core

HIGH SCHOOLERS

The Jungle Gym

In this program, teenagers will develop a deep understanding of improv principles to tackle long-form structures. A rigorous focus on scene work, collaboration, and ownership of each player’s comedic voice is used to prepare players for performance.

Beginners welcome.
